Pocket dragons are one of the most endearing collectibles around. They have a rich and interesting history with grass roots beginnings. Currently pocket dragons are no longer in production which makes the figurines increasingly more valuable. Since there is a limited number of them around, many people are looking to pocket dragons as not only an interesting and fun collecting hobby but also a possible lucrative investment. While pocket dragons are still fairly new, they have appreciated in value and in several years, some of them may be extremely rare. Even if you are not interested in the potential monetary gain of collecting pocket dragons, they are still a wonderful addition to any home’s décor.
The idea for pocket dragons came into being in the 1970’s when the artist, Real Musgrave, created some black and white drawings of a small dragon peeking out of a pocket. This left an impression and the idea for pocket dragon figurines was born. Development began on unique, friendly dragons in various situations. Musgrave created the artwork for all the pocket dragon concepts and also sculpted the original figurines. Once the originals were sculpted by Musgrave they were sent to the manufacturer, Collectible World Studios, for mass production. The first line of twenty seven pocket dragons was released in 1989 with the first figurine, New Bunny Shoes.
From conception to his retirement in 2006, Musgrave maintained creative control over his pocket dragon line, creating over four hundred different figurines. The figurines were immediately popular in the United States as well as in England and remain so today. In addition to the familiar figurines, pocket dragons have also been sold as snow globes, ornaments and paintings. There was even a short lived animated television series based on pocket dragons. Since the retirement of the artist and subsequently the line of pocket dragons, it is not unusual to see some pieces selling at auctions for well over $1,000.00.
Nowadays you can get pocket dragons in collectible stores, by networking and online. There is a Pocket Dragon Collectors’ Club where collectors of the figurines can trade stories, tips and barter with one another on trades, purchases and sales. Not all pocket dragons are expensive so the amateur collector or hobbyist can obtain some figurines at reasonable prices. However, if you already own pocket dragons, research the piece to obtain the value and even get an independent appraisal. You may just find you are holding on to a valuable collectible that will only appreciate in time.
Pocket dragons are fun and adorable collectible items most people are sure to love. In addition, they are fast becoming a lucrative collectible item with increasing values. The figurines make excellent gifts and will be perfect to hand down from generation to generation. Look to increase your collection of pocket dragons by searching local collectors and online auctions. If you are really lucky you may just stumble upon some great deals at garage sales and flea markets for those who do not know what it is they have.
