They are different then say, an item that is made for other purposes, but is something people collect, such as coins or stamps. Goebel/Hummel figurines fall into that first category. Franz Goebel had the thought that figurines of children would bring the German people happiness in such difficult times…and he was right! That is why Goebel fell in love with the artwork of Sister Hummel and sent a representative to seek her out, taking with him sample sculptures based on her artwork. Sister Hummel was pleased with the idea of seeing her drawings come to life, as it were. After dotting some “i’s” and crossing some “t’s”, a wonderful partnership was formed.

On the back of this delightful bell is “1982” in bas relief, with the famous M.I. Hummel signature embossed. The bell is six inches in height and the oval base is four inches across at its widest point. On this Hummel bell’s front is a captivating little boy in a brown Bavarian cap. He is very colorfully dressed in a sky-blue checked shirt, red neckerchief and brown pants. Beside him are beautiful red flowers nesting in a patch of green grass. As the beguiling child sits in front of a wooden fence, upon which a yellow bird sits, watching curiously as the boy works intently with a daisy, reciting “she loves me, she loves me not”… How do you think it turns out? This gorgeous 1982 Goebel/ Hummel annual bell would make a most appealing addition to your collection!

On November 12, 2006, the very last Pocket Dragon event was held, followed by Real and Muff Musgrave’s retirement, effective on December 31st of that year. Real Musgrave created and designed these precious Hummel collectibles, not only drawing the flat artwork, but also sculpting them. This is most unusual in the artistic world of collectible lines. Real and his wife, Muff, had nearly complete creative control over the Pocket Dragon line, making certain that their artistic vision came to life. The Pocket Dragons came a long way from the limited set of black and white drawings done by Real Musgrave in mid-1970, which captured a little dragon in the pocket of a tweed sport jacket.

One of four ornaments released in 2002 is Sugar Plum Fairy, which is not in the Band of Angels boxed set. This darling, mint condition ornament stands approximately 2 ¾ inches high and was retired in December 2004. Clad in a frilly, ice pink tutu, the charming little dragon has a merry twinkle in her eyes. A golden halo gleams over her head, which is adorned with bright green holly leaves with shiny red berries. The exquisite dragon fairy has a beautiful red ribbon, stretching in an arc over her head, while she grasps an end in each delicate hand. The soft, light pink of her muzzle and inner ears are quite endearing and her friendly expression is inviting. The authentic Pocket Dragon’s copyright is Real Musgrave, The Whimsical World of Pocket DragonsTM and is distributed in the United States by Goebel of North America L.L.C. Bring the delightful, enchanted world of Pocket Dragons into your home, with this captivating 2002 Sugar Plum Fairy Pocket Dragon ornament!

With Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel figurines, you are entering a world of whimsy and creativity, unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Handcrafted in porcelain and hand-painted, these delightful figurines are sculpted, based on Sister Hummel’s drawings. These irresistible figurines show the ability to survive the passage of time. Shortly after World War II, M.I. Hummel figurines became popular in the United States when soldiers, who were returning home from Germany, brought back these darling porcelain figurines of Bavarian children, in their captivating day to day lives.

This fetching porcelain M.I. Hummel figurine #2002 called “Making New Friends” stands 6.75 inches tall. The adorable figurine is an endearing scene of a little brown-haired boy, with his cheeks a little flushed from the cold, playfully discovering the joys of winter, as he builds a snowman. He is bundled up in a cute lavender jacket and knit hat with pompom, plus matching orange mittens and scarf that is fluttering in the breeze. With his cold weather gear and green pants, he makes quite the colorful picture. The charming boy’s eyes are wide with wonder, as he regards his new snowy friend. He has built his snowman next to a small snow-covered pine tree.

The lad has done a thorough job in adorning his new friend with four buttons of coal for his “coat”, coal for his eyes and a carrot for his nose. A distinguished black top hat with an orange band and a broom, for the snowman’s right hand, complete the look. As the child puts the finishing touches on his new friend, he is precariously balanced on a wooden sled. This wonderful figurine has the authentic Hummel trademark “TM7”, artist’s signature, “97, Goebel, Germany”. Also incised is “#60” and “1996”. This magnificent figurine is in mint condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing. Wouldn’t you love to have this exquisite Hummel #2002 “Making New Friends” figurine as part of your cherished collection?

Hummel figurines beginnings were in 1935 in Germany, but the art behind the origins went much farther back, to the younger days of Berta Hummel. After attending the Academy of Applied Arts in Munich, Berta joined the Convent of Siessen, which, as of 1860, was dedicated to teaching and was most supportive of the arts. Berta became Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel and taught art at St. Anna, a school for girls, nearby. Families would even have her paint their children’s portraits and the proceeds went to help support the convent. Sister Hummel never stopped sketching caricatures of the Bavarian children from her rural childhood, full of naivety and sincerity. Her artwork and reputation made their way to Munich and came to the attention of Franz Goebel. He thought that figurines of children would bring happiness to the Germans in tough times. An agreement was signed between Goebel’s company and Sister Hummel in January 1935, with the proceeds going to the Convent and history was made.

Entitled “Celestial Musician”, this hard-to-find ornament is made of porcelain; hand painted with a matte finish and has a golden cord for hanging on your tree. This precious little angel wears a floor-length, green gown, adorned with yellow stars and a slim red band on the sleeve of her right arm. A brown satchel lies strapped across her body, resting against her right side. Her lovely golden brown hair swoops forward, as a flattering complement to her rosy cheeks. With her eyes glancing downward, lost in the music, she earnestly plays her violin, her right hand holding the bow. This eye-catching angel has gorgeous, crystal-like wings, delicately shaded in yellow and edged in vivid orange-red. The genuine Hummel signature is incised on the back of the ornament and an incised #646, along with Goebel, Germany 1991 marks the base. This piece also boasts an original label that reads “First Issue, Erste Ausgabe, 1993”. This exquisite and enchanting 1993 Goebel/Hummel Celestial Musician Christmas ornament #646 would look breathtaking either on your tree, or displayed in your collection!

Sister Innocentia Hummel was born, Berta Hummel, in Bavaria in Germany. She began painting pictures of children, which were transformed into postcards. These came to the attention of Franz Goebel and a partnership was formed. This endearing photo is an authentic, antique Hummel collectible, set into a wooden frame, which is approximately 6 ¾” x 5 ½” and has “Made In Germany” on its back. The requisite Hummel signature is at the bottom right of the photo.

The picture is of a darling little girl, wearing a blue kerchief with matching apron worn over a red checked dress. She is sitting prettily in a field filled with blue and yellow flowers. Her hair is in braids, tied at the end with red ribbon and perhaps there is a breeze blowing, because her braid is uplifted. In the girl’s hands are knitting needles, with her knitting project in red; the ball of yarn lying in the grass. There is a partial fence visible and behind it is a slender tree, with its graceful branches reaching above the child. Perched on a lower branch is a yellow bird, its mouth open in song. The little girl, eyes closed, is perhaps entranced and singing along. This appealing photo is one that could enhance in any room of your home and give you something to treasure for a lifetime!

It was modeled by Helmut Ficher in 1999 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Issued for the U.S. military, it is to honor the men and women who bravely serve their country. Standing 8” tall, this outstanding set consists of two porcelain figurines, a wooden base and a mountable plastic rainbow that provides a cheery background.

The first figurine, called “Crossroads”, is of a young lad comfortably dressed in a light green jacket, brown pants, orange scarf and a tan billed cap. With a “hobo” sack slung over his left shoulder and his right hand in his pocket, the child is contemplating a signpost with its “HALT” sign down and eye-catching orange flowers at its base. A blue bird is perched on the sign pointing “west”; the opposite sign pointing “ost” or east. The “Happy Traveler” is the second delightful figurine. He is a captivating youngster, lips pursed in a whistle and his left leg extended upwards in a joyous manner, as if he is marching. The charming lad, hands tucked in his pockets, is wearing a light green jacket and grey pants, which contrast warmly with his bright orange umbrella that is tucked under his left arm. Each figurine has a special decal of both the American and German flags under the base. This endearing set would make a wonderful patriotic addition to your Hummel collection or as a stand-alone piece for any collection.
